Film Capacitor

A film capacitor is a very important device used in many power conversion circuit designs. In fact, this component is oftentimes referred to by design engineers as a “critical” component in their circuit. Film capacitors are typically high-voltage, high-current, long life capacitors used in DC Link, input filtering, output filtering, snubber and arc suppression applications. These capacitors are found in traction systems, inverters, high-energy medical equipment, renewable energy power generation (solar, wind, etc.), power supplies, welding, and induction heating. Whereas aluminum electrolytic capacitors are nearly always polarized (positive terminal and negative terminal), film capacitors are decidedly non-polar and can therefore be used in all voltage reversal applications. Many film capacitors include a self-healing characteristic: the capacitor "heals" in microseconds after an internal short circuit caused by an overvoltage transient. Key characteristics that should be considered when choosing the appropriate film capacitor include overall AC/DC voltage rating (V), Maximum RMS voltage and Maximum RMS current specifications, ripple current (Amps), dV/dt (V/uS), and Case/Package Type.
